How the 3-minute filler song made it to the title itself
Heavy Metal was influenced by Blues Rock bands. It started to evolve in the late 1960s and developed immense popularity in the 1970s. The genre’s main characteristics are vigorous vocals, aggressive drumming and distorted riffs. Often contains topics as anti-religion, war, death and drugs, Satan is also its symbol.
Black Sabbath: After many different members and countless changes, the band was finally formed in 1968 with the members: Tonni Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. The name of the band was inspired of a horror movie. First, they wrote a song called Black Sabbath, then they decided to call themselves as such. Their first album was made in February 1970. This self-titled album was a great success, so they had to go on with the flow and create another album right away. This is when they started to work on the Paranoid album. The band’s second album was already released in the same year.
Paranoid: This album is the second one during the band’s carrier. It was released in 1970, and the three most popular songs of the band are on this album: War Pigs, Iron Man and Paranoid, the song which started as a filler song but ended up as the title of the album. The meaning of the word ‘Paranoid’ is questionable for the band members as well. “Basically, it’s just about depression, because I did not really know the difference between depression and paranoia. It is a drug thing.” - says one of the band members, Bassist Geezer Butler in 2013. Without doubts, the Paranoid track provided the success for the band. Even though it was not their favourite, it was favoured by the radios and the fans as well.
