Country: Around the 1920s, country music originated in Appalachia and in the American South by adapting English and Irish Folk music. String instruments such as fiddles, guitars and banjos were the main instruments to be used within country music. Jimmy Rodgers became one of the first national stars of the genre by singing within the genre, Traditional Country. Later, Honky Tonk was developed, but it started to fade into other music genres like mainstreaming pop music. There were always some neo-traditionalists musicians who wanted to stay true to the origins of country music.
George Jones managed to release one of the best albums not only in his career but within the history of country music. It never was his technical singing skills, but the emotions he could convey through singing either the melancholic lyrics or the jumper honky-tonk songs. He created the most honest album in country music ever, no studio tricks, edited voices, it was only him and his honest vocals due to the deep emotions he felt about his music. He was not the only one singing about heartbreaks and liquors, but he did it with real intensions and expressions.
I Am What I Am: Something honest, vulnerable, melancholic yet jumper honky-tonk. That is how great this album turned out. Even though George Jones had to reach the lowest point of his personal life, it created a turning point where he could create the “I am what I am” by looking deeply into his own soul. This album contains the greatest country song “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, about a man who never forgot his lost love, only after he died. A major part of the album is melancholic, but he did not miss to add some upbeat songs spiced with self-irony. He still sings about love and liquors, but these tracks kick the mood back up. This album is stated as the most honest country music ever sang.
