Bad Bunny introduces political issues through culture
Reggaetón comes from “Reggae en español”, which was the Afro-Panamanian version of Reggae and Dancehall. Reggaetón quickly spread throughout the Caribbean thanks to artists like El General, becoming especially popular in Puerto Rico. We could name Daddy Yankee and Don Omar as the genre’s most successful artists in the mid-2000s. Nevertheless, it continued to dominate across Latin America, launching the careers of many artists from Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominican Republic.
Bad Bunny is a Puerto Rican musician with a global following. He became a success while writing and singing in Spanish. In 2020, his album El Último Tour del Mundo became the first all-Spanish album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2026, he continued to reach success with his only Spanish-language album, therefore he won a Grammy for Album of the Year with Debí Tirar Más Fotos.
Debí Tirar Más Fotos: There are a lot of political lines that are embedded within the album, DtMF. Bad Bunny talks about mass tourism, that people whose are visiting, they are not aware of the battles locals are fighting. He also mentions electricity blackouts, corruption and he does not miss to mention the purchase of properties by outsiders either. With the title itself, “I should have taken more photos” – he treasures memories for those who left too early. We cannot forget the importance of the original flag’s colours and its meaning. For Puerto Ricans it was a symbol of protest. “They killed people here for waving the flag, that is why I bring it anywhere I want now.” With the help of law, they banned the ownership of the flag in the history of Puerto Rico. Melendez-Badillo says they did not want to leave the island, Puerto Ricans wanted to stay and people only moved out of necessity. Overall, this album reaffirms the existence and cultural legacy of Puerto Rico.
