Michael Jackson’s top charts pop album: Thriller
Pop: This genre is more about what was popular in a specific decade when the exact songs reached the top charts, not about its own characteristics. Each pop music release is closely tied with the mass marketing and production. The pop genre includes music that aims for the high-ending sales of the tour tickets with products to be purchased. Pop music tends to emphasize the vocalist as the lead performer. A basic intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus structure is very common in pop music. It is designed to be catchy, with a beat, a melody, a lyric or a hook that are accessible to young people mostly.
Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. He was only 5 years old when he joined to the Jackson 5 group as the lead vocalist. He started his solo career while he was still performing with the Jackson 5. He released “Got to Be There” (1971), “Ben” (1972), “Music and Me” (1973), and finally “Forever, Michael” (1975) as his last album with Motown Records. Later he released “Off the Wall” (1979), his first album with Epic Records. With this album he reached a more complex level of his music career. In 1982, he released the Thriller album, which has won many awards, and it became the best-selling album of all time, having sold 67 million copies worldwide.
Michael Jackson’s Thriller album was created for the mainstream, to reach the top of the charts, to be the most streamed album ever. It was made to be purchased, listened and watched. This perfectly reflects on the meaning of pop music. Pop is a genre where the number of sales and streams are important. Every single track was a hit by itself. Furthermore, Michael Jackson was only interested in working with people he admired, the very best of each field. Another breakthrough came across during the production of the music videos, because he treated each of them as an event, like mini movies. As Michael Jackson had planned, Thriller became the biggest-selling studio album ever.
